5 card stud poker is a type of poker game where players are playing against the dealer and not other players.
The game begins by players placing an ante bet on the poker table to receive their cards. The dealer then shuffles a pack of cards and deals face down to each player 5 cards and then deals 5 cards to himself, 4 cards face down and 1 card face up for all the players to see.
Players are then given the opportunity to look at the 5 cards that they have been dealt. If they feel that they have a strong hand then they can 'raise' the bet which can only be double the ante. If the player has a weak hand, they can fold and will lose their ante. Once players have decided to raise or fold, the dealer then reveals their hand and in order to play the ante, the dealer has to have an ace or a king. If this is not the case then the dealer has to pay out even money on the ante only.
The next step for the dealer; if they do have a minimum or good hand is to compare their hand against the hand that each player has. In order for a player to win a bet, the players hand needs to be higher than that of the dealer. If this is the case then the player win's the bet and will receive the following pay out against the following odds:
one pair 1-1, 2 pair 2-1, 3 of a kind 3-1, straight 4-1, flush 5-1, full house 7-1, four of a kind 20-1, straight flush 50-1 and royal flush 100-1.
